The Magic Circle isn’t just a puzzle game, it’s also a commentary on games media in general. The plucky fan intern wants The Magic Circle to be high so she can brag about it on her streaming channel, and the former pro gamer turned game designer just wants out of this job. Hidden voice recordings can be found throughout the map to fill in gaps and answer questions. There are reasons Ish, the game designer, has taken so long to perfect his game. Sure there are objectives, but they’re optional. The game never actually tells you how to play but instead gives you the tools and asks you to figure it out. It all gets colored you just choose the colors. Obstacles are built around a general idea but solved in your own way, kind of like a coloring book. And since you have no weapons you need other creatures to do the fighting for you, like having a fireproof flying robot kill everything in your path. Well, you give turtles the power to float and jump on them. Maybe there is a large gap between you and a key that you need. Gameplay is unlike many other puzzle games where you steal the power of a game god–trap their creations, swap behaviors, and body parts, and make whatever kind of creature you’d like at that moment. It is a bit of a crutch, but that doesn’t take away from the core of the game. It’s a clever look that other games don’t have. The game is filled with broken or unfinished art and characters. Sabotaging development, turning people against one another, and ruining a press conference are all elements throughout the story that eventually builds to a significant change in game play. And after so long in development hell, the game has finally had enough of this. It goes through change after change, and he still can’t decide how he wants his masterpiece to reflect upon the world. You’re a play tester, playing the latest game from a world-renowned game developer who just can’t seem to get his newest would-be release right. Thankfully the map is full of voice recordings and secrets to paint a picture of what is exactly going on in this world. Given no real guidelines or rules but a varying array of abilities, you’re expected to figure it out and explore on your own. It all depends on your problem-solving ability. Mostly a first-person puzzle game, TMC can be completed in a matter of 30 minutes, or it could take you all week. The first few hours of The Magic Circle are an interesting and broad take on the development of games, or lack thereof. Now shifting my focus over to the real main attraction to this game, Poe, and Munro. You never get to see the wife in person so no emotional attachment is formed from the player, so naturally, I found myself rooting for Poe and Munro as you can physically see the chemistry between the two at all times whilst at the same time being conflicted about the pro infidelity message the game seems to want to promote. Although the relationship arc did enlighten me to the term Schrödinger’s marriage… which is something… Overall, it doesn’t impact the game too fiercely but the whole thing just seemed wholly unnecessary and bizarre as to why it was written in the first place. That is until in one of the later episodes, where Poe states that his wife had cheated on him in the past, but he remained with her and again…. In nearly every episode, Munro will always make a dig at Poe for not getting serious about their relationship and leaving his wife to which Poe will always respond ‘it’s complicated and then the game just moves on. There was no deep moral message and it never really played into the genre of the episodes, it’s just kind of there. The reason this is a problem is that I don’t really understand why the adultery plotline was even required especially seeing as the topic itself was very lightly touched upon throughout the game anyway. The game makes it very clear and obvious through body chemistry and dialogue that they are very much into each other with the game having at least one awkward sex innuendo each episode which succumbs to acting usually found on most pornographic sites, but this relationship in itself is not the issue it’s the fact the Poe is married which means his little tango with Munro is an affair. This brings me to my next point of a negative experience I had with this game, Poe and Munro’s relationship. I feel that there will be others that may be disappointed that the game didn’t go full ‘X-Files’ as the supernatural elements in this game are paper-thin with the conclusions to some of the episodes being anti-climactic usually resulting in something related to Poe and Munro’s odd relationship rather than the supernatural theme itself. However, personally, I found that I enjoyed this aspect, as it meant that it was easy-going content to just chill through on a Saturday night. This means there’s the problem of the game leaving the player confused about the choices that were made and if they actually meant anything, especially when on rare occasions the later episodes do make a call back to earlier episodes so it’s never really clear on what’s canon and what carries over. Each episode tells its own story, which could be frustrating for some as the consequences and problems that are presented in one episode are completely forgotten about in the next, much like a weekly cartoon show. Adding to this, the episodes for the most part don’t connect with each other. But the real charm of the game is that it never takes these topics too seriously and each episode teeters between comedy and spooky (as I don’t think this game quite qualifies to the rank of horror). The story told varies with each episode showcasing supernatural beings such as recently deceased ghosts or demons in paintings or even werewolves. Suffice to say it’s the perfect setting for a chill vibe with just enough enjoyable cringe for dipping on the side.Įach episode is essentially a penny dreadful and although considered a derogatory term it really couldn’t suit this game any better in the best way. Shamefully shaking your head at the thought of entertaining the idea that someone describing their dream of a love affair with the ghostly figure they stumbled upon in an abandoned sunflower field might symbolize our soul yearning for what we don’t have when all it probably means is they stayed up late watching Ghostbusters. It’s one of those radio shows you might catch whilst driving alone at 2 am. Taking calls in relation to the supernatural or asking about the caller’s dreams or nightmares. Poe and Munro takes place in the small fictional British town of August, where both John Poe and Ellis Munro are both seemingly self-employed at a radio station aptly named Radio August. And still sitting pretty in 2021 it wears its campiness proudly on its sleeve with the single exception that this time, we have better cameras. It’s a style of gaming that’s worn its campy style proudly all over itself from all the way back in 1992 with the likes of titles such as Night Trap and Corpse Killer. There’s something special about the world of FMV games. Tune in for the Supernatural, Stay for the FMV. The latter retains more details and warmer tones on the stone wall from the golden hour sun, but the arch below the dome and the tree outside become merged with the overexposed sky. It also appears pale and blanched in HDR compared to the RAW beside it. The JPEG below uses HDR to retain the blue sky and some details on the domed structure outside but lacks details. The intricate carvings on these red sandstone walls teleport you back to the 13th century. The following set of images shows one of the entrances to the central complex of the tower. In addition, the warmer greens and brighter yellows give the image a suitable summer afternoon look. The brickwork on the minaret and the surrounding buildings have been highlighted well, whereas most of the details on the trees have been restored. The sky has been highlighted beautifully, making the capital city’s gruesome pollution almost invisible. Now, look at the edited version of the same image. Admittedly, the unedited RAW appears relatively darker, with shadows blending the tree’s leaves into one while the contrast on the minaret gives it extra noise. The tree’s twisty trunk is visible in both, and so are the bricks used in the structures far behind it. Both images retain just enough details for you to view them on a phone screen and not witness any tearing. The first set of images taken with the primary camera on the Galaxy S22 Ultra capture the minaret and the surrounding landscape in its glory. I have also included them in a Flickr gallery at the end of this section for a better overview. So that you can enjoy all the images without any compression, click on each photo in the gallery below. Each set includes one JPEG captured using the main Camera app, an unedited version of the photo taken with Expert RAW, and one or more edited versions of the same RAW file. To demonstrate how RAW photographs give you the ability to transform an image significantly, I will use sets of at least three pictures. I am using a set of comparable images I took using the stock Camera app and the Expert RAW app on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, while walking around an 800-year-old World Heritage Site - the Qutab Minar - in New Delhi, India. In the Expert RAW app, you get an interface identical to the stock Camera app’s Pro Mode, but instead of images saving as JPEG files, they’re saved as RAW files. Thankfully, Samsung provides an additional camera app called Expert RAW, that’s exclusively available on only some of its top-tier devices. However, many of those details are preserved in a RAW file, but to exploit them, you normally have to be adept at tools like Photoshop’s Camera RAW or Adobe Lightroom. But in doing so, the camera compromises on details, especially in the areas of the image that are poorly lit or underexposed. Images saved in JPEG format are compressed after being shot to preserve storage space. So if you want to quickly add a filter or do some minor editing, JPEGs are the best choice. JPEGs are preprocessed images that look great for our smartphones, and are perfect to upload on social media. I don’t mean to imply that images shot in JPEG are always bad - or at least worse than those caught in RAW. How RAW improves photography on Galaxy S22 Ultra Next, I will take you through my experience shooting in RAW on the Galaxy S22 Ultra and why I would recommend it to everyone who finds themselves limited by the shooting capabilities of the phone’s stock camera mode. Simply put, RAW has the same effects on photographs as Red Bull has on your adrenal glands. The details stored in a RAW file allow you to improve the image through editing, giving them a different mood or changing the ambiance dramatically. While RAW images take up significant amounts of storage, it also allows the picture to retain more detail than the type of JPEG or a PNG image the camera usually saves. It is an unprocessed version of an image and is only minimally compressed. But what we’re looking at here is the software.Īnyone who has spent sufficient time fiddling with cameras would have heard of the term “RAW.” A RAW file is the equivalent of the negative on a film roll. The Galaxy S22 Ultra makes best use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and its powerful image signal processor and AI engine, plus Samsung has specially tuned the 108MP”s camera software for great results in almost any conditions. What are the benefits of shooting in RAW? If you’re intrigued, here’s what to expect from these powerful features. What you want is to try the Pro-grade settings and features, including RAW photography.

However, they failed to launch the mass production of the substance. The results of all those tests inspired their initiators to supply D-IX drug to the entire Nazi Army. The so-called Experiment D-IX started in November of the year 1944 in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Nazi researchers used concentration camp inmates to test a cocaine-based “wonder drug” they hoped would enhance the performance of German troops. The development of these methods and technologies has a long history. Thousands of innocent victims across the globe have become activists for their freedom.Įlectromagnetic mind control technologies are weapons which use electromagnetic waves to hijack a person’s brain and nervous system and subvert an individual’s sense of control over their own thinking, behavior, emotions or decision making. One of the twenty-first century’s greatest violations of human rights is the proliferation of mind control technologies and their accompanying abuse and torture. Recent years, the words “mind control abuse and torture” and “target individual” appears frequently online. Soleimavis Liu presented this paper at the recent E-Leader conference held by Fudan University and Chinese American Scholars Association in Shanghai, January 5-7, 2015. Slashing, hopping, and exploding my way through each area again and again only managed to endear me more and more to the world and its characters, not counting the few aggravating enemies like those castle servants that made me want to pull out my teeth with carpenters’ tools. This walkthrough is designed to help you with approaching the game as you take on the role of Skul. Even where the story stumbles, Skul’s retro world of skeletons and knights is absolutely dripping with charm, from its beautiful, pixelated art style to its role reversal in which the demons are the good guys and humans are monsters to be slain. That said, there are some compelling characters that shine through, like the shape-shifting witch who helps you along your journey and (my personal favorite) a cowardly death knight who loves knitting and interior design. The translation from its original Korean dialogue into English is fairly poor at times, and the brief snippets of conversation that take place after each boss battle come off stiff and a bit awkward – which isn’t helped by the fact that the twists and turns of the story are about as predictable as they come. While it is a heartfelt story, its tale of the age-old conflict between the Demon Kingdom and the evil Nation of Men is not particularly well told. “Speaking of poor timing, last year Hades raised the bar for storytelling in rogue-lite action games to godly levels, which makes Skul’s look a bit dimmer by comparison. But with a solid build and no small amount of practice, making it to the credits is an attainable and enjoyable reward that salves the burn of dozens of failed runs. There are five distinct areas to fight your way through, each with a unique roster of mobs, environmental hazards, awesome retro soundtracks, and a big boss battle lying in wait to knock your block off at the end. As someone who’s seen the endings of games like Dead Cells, Hades, and Darkest Dungeon, it took me over 20 hours of attempts to defeat the final boss and get my first clear (a successful run taking about an hour). Even boons like that won’t make it easy, because Skul is, as you’d expect – nay, demand – from a game of this type, downright difficult. Some are as simple as increasing your magic damage or movement speed, but others might even define your entire build, like the fairy followers that become more powerful the more you manage to collect, to the point where you can summon a demigod ally if you’re able to gather all five in a single playthrough. “But each playthrough is not just defined by the heads you choose – the variety of random items you collect as you go is much deeper than that. The diversity of styles is extremely impressive. During one successful run I used a magic-casting sorcerer to rain down hellfire upon my enemies, and the next I upgraded a soldier skull to be the ultimate undead general with the ability to summon a dozen friendly underlings at a time. In games like this I usually search for a build that fits my playstyle and then stick with it as much as possible, but in Skul I found myself willing and able to play with just about anybody, no matter how wildly different they were, and have a great time. That said, it’s still always a great feeling when something amazing does drop into your lap to instantly make you a badass, especially since you can keep your favorite parts of your previous build around in that second skull slot anyway.Ĭritically, every single character is not only genuinely fun to play, but feels totally viable in the endgame. This is fantastic because it means you’re not always at the mercy of getting that lucky loot drop you can control your own destiny by building a more common skull up over the course of your run to make it every bit as viable in the endgame. Some of these options are powerful as soon as you find them, while others are weaker and need to be upgraded during your run until they reach their final, most powerful form, which means that you can either grind your way to greatness slowly as you progress or just get damn lucky and find an amazing skull that has you scrambling to adjust your entire build around it. Some skulls aren’t even usable without a second skull to rely upon, like the Bomber skull, whose sole purpose is to self-destruct as quickly and devastatingly as possible, forcing you into your alternate skull form. For example, you might want to play as one of the many slow but powerful melee classes like the Predator to brute force your way through combat, but you will likely need a fast-moving skull in your second slot to switch to when you get caught in a tight spot and need to make a quick exit. “In fact, rapidly swapping between your two equipped heads and using their skills synergistically is essential. pgpartman), opting instead to just add a small background job to our existing worker framework. We added our first partitioned table recently, and things have gotten so good that we skipped bringing in a partition-managing extension (e.g. It’s largely been a story of getting partitioned tables up to feature parity with non-partitioned tables, and they’re now very, very close. Postgres 14: Partitions can be detached in a non-blocking way with ALTER TABLE.Postgres 13: Logical replication on partitioned tables (previously, partitions would have to be replicated individually).Postgres 13: Support for row-level BEFORE triggers on partitioned tables. Postgres 12: Improved INSERT performance, ALTER TABLE ATTACH PARTITION no longer blocks queries.Postgres 12: Foreign keys can reference partitioned tables.Postgres 11: UPDATE statements can move rows between partitions.Postgres 11: INSERT on the parent partitioned table routes rows to their appropriate partition.Postgres 11: Support for PRIMARY KEY, FOREIGN KEY, indexes, and triggers on partitioned tables.Postgres 10: Brings in the original CREATE TABLE.Here’s a sprinkling of new features that have come into Postgres over the last five years: And even once Postgres got support for native partitioning, things were always harder – routing inserts/updates, adding/removing partitions, adding indexes, support for features like foreign keys and triggers, etc.īut, a lot of work has gone into improving the operator experience since partitioning was introduced. Not long ago there was no formal partitioning at all in Postgres – it was entirely a user-level construct which needed all kinds of manual plumbing to run. It executes instantly, and with negligible costs (partitioning has other benefits too). Each row removal land in the WAL, resulting in significant amplification.īut with partitions, deletion becomes a simple DROP TABLE. A long running query must iterate through and mark each one as dead, and even then nothing is reclaimed until an equally expensive vacuum runs through and frees space, and only when it’s allowed to after rows are no longer visible to any other query in the system, whether they’re making use of the large table or not. In Postgres, trying to remove old rows from a large, hot table is flitting with disaster. Hopefully if you followed those steps, your table should be sorted in exactly the order you want.Partitioned tables aren’t an everyday go to, but are invaluable in some cases, particularly when you have a high volume table that’s expected to keep growing. Now unless you want to keep the view, rule, and sequence around, you can drop them:.UPDATE view_team SET priority = nextval('team_priority_seq') This will update each row in sequence, and serves as an alternative to using user-defined variables, as we did in MySQL: You can change more than one field in this rule by adding more fields to the UPDATE part of that query, but since we are only applying changes to the priority field, this will suffice. This specifies that when you try to run an update on the view_team view, it will apply those changes to the team table where we want those changes to show up. To run the update on the view you just created, you have to create a rule telling the view how to interpret UPDATE queries you’re going to run on it:ĬREATE RULE rule_team AS ON UPDATE TO view_team DO INSTEAD UPDATE team SET priority = NEW.priority WHERE id = NEW.id.You must first create a view on the table that you want to update in the particular order that you want to update by:ĬREATE VIEW view_team AS SELECT * FROM team ORDER BY name ASC.It turns out, the solution requires the use of views, rules, and sequences, things that are foreign to most MySQL users and all but the more advanced PostgreSQL users. However, under PostgreSQL, this is much more challenging, and I couldn’t find any easy solution on the web. Piece of cake: each employee is given a certain priority according to name. SET team SET priority = ORDER BY name ASC However, recently they asked us to sort their employee table according to name. This allowed them to order their employees according to any criteria they desire (say, in this case, seniority, or rank). For one particular client, they wanted the ability to sort their list of team members according to priority. In many of our tables we allow site administrators to sort elements (rows) according to a certain priority (in this case, 1 being the highest priority). Something I’ve found frequently valuable is the ability to update a table in a particular order, such as when you want a column to have a particular numerical sequence, and you want that sequence to share the same order as another field. MySQL is great in that it really lets you get away with a lot. |
